The Killer Squad

The following poem was written for my brother Richard Michael Martin in May of 1972. He had sent the family a picture of him and some of his Marine buddies. I still remember Mom's laughter when I looked at the tough looking boys and said...."My God, they look like the killer squad!" The term stuck and I wrote the following poem for Mike and sent it to him. He wrote back that "The Killer Squad" got puffed up egos when they read the poem, and they all wanted to meet me! I never met any of the guys, and yet I thought of each of them as "family" and worried over them as much as I did Mike.

We lost Mike in 1986 due to a heart attack. His birthday is February 9th, so, in view of all the turmoil in today's world, and the fact that it's his birthday time, I thought I'd post The Killer Squad in his memory. Hope you enjoy it, and if anyone in my reading audience served in the Marines with Mike, please drop me an e-mail and say hello.

The Killer Squad

There were five of them who stood ... so straight and tall...

All for one ....and one for all.

They are Marines ... so tried and true,

Whether in brown ... or dress blue.

They call themselves ... The "Killer Squad!" ...

Just call on them, to do the job!

Upon the USS Roosevelt ... far at sea

I guess they're heroes ... to people like me.

So do one favor, for us back home...

If you go off to battle ... in forests still unknown,

Please watch over each other...

And protect one another.

Because across that deep blue sea...

There's parents, wives, brothers and sisters, like me,

Leaving the midnight oil burn...

Hoping and waiting ... for a safe return.

But I have faith in you ... doing your job,

After all ... You are The Killer Squad!
