POLICE KEEPING MUM

Police officals were on the scene of an investigation at 161 Bungay Road in Seymour on Saturday. The site was excavated, but it is unclear what officals were investigating.
SEYMOUR — A swarm of police from numerous agencies descended on a secluded farm in Seymour on Friday night and all day Saturday as excavators unearthed mounds of dirt from a field atop a hill.
Neighbors said that around 6 p.m. Friday police appeared at the farm at 161 Bungay Road. All day Saturday, a Seymour police officer was blocking off the entrance to the farm, which is enclosed by thick woods and a barbed-wire fence.
Around 5 p.m. Saturday, a convoy of unmarked Crown Victorias left the farm, including a Connecticut Police Major Crime Squad van. The Federal Bureau of Investigation's field office in New Haven confirmed that FBI agents were assisting state police with the investigation.
Lt. J. Paul Vance, spokesman for the state police, said that a "multijurisdictional investigation" was occurring at the farm. He said if the investigation is successful, a news conference would be scheduled.
Last year, federal investigators excavated private property in Connecticut, searching for the body of Bill Smolinski Jr., who had vanished from his home in Waterbury on Aug. 24, 2004. The construction worker was 31 when he disappeared.
Janice Smolinski, Bill's mother, said she has been in touch with authorities but wouldn't comment on whether they were investigating the disappearance of her son at the Seymour location.
Saturday afternoon, at the base of the farm's hill, horses and sheep grazed quietly. Toward the middle of the property lies a well-kept house, and at the top is a field, where two excavators were digging. The farm spans 20 acres, one neighbor said.
Near the excavation site, at least 10 state police vehicles were parked on the property, and there was a state police K9 unit on hand.
At midday, a man wearing an American flag T-shirt was spraying the driveway to the house with a high-powered washer continuously for at least an hour.
An hour later, a police officer guarding the excavation site said that he had been told to prevent anyone from approaching it.
A resident of nearby Brookfield Road who knows the property's owner said she was told not to say anything about the investigation. The neighbor, who asked not to be identified, would not reveal who owned the property. She said she thought digging would resume today.
Waterbury police had investigated Smolinski's disappearance until the case was turned over to the FBI in 2006.
In May 2007, the FBI dug up a driveway in Shelton after receiving a tip that Smolinski's body was buried there. According to information supplied to law enforcement agencies in that investigation, Smolinski supposedly was killed by the son of his ex-girlfriend. The son buried the body under the driveway before it was paved, police said.
The son, who has since died of a drug overdose, was said to have been working construction at the Shelton house while it was built.
